The charge is given as a pairle sable in both Forman's Armorial (1563) and the Slains Armorial (1565) but as a shakefork sable in the Hamilton Armorial (1560). A pairle (identical to a pall) extends to the edge of the shield, whereas a shakefork stops short. #Armorial #Heraldic

In the Hamilton Armorial (1560) only the coat of the Earldom of Moray is given. Both the Slains Armorial (1563) and Forman's Armorial (1565) give also the arms of Scotland, but with quarters interchanged compared to here. Each gives the field of the Moray quarters as or, not argent. #Armorial #Moray

Both the Hamilton and Forman Armorials give subtly different arms for the Earl Marischal, viz. Argent on a chief gules three pales or. The arms depicted in the window match those of William Keith of Inverugie (from a cadet branch) as given in the Slains Armorial. #Heraldic #Armorial #CoatOfArms
