To wrap up #SnakeWeek we have a smooth green snake, Opheodrys vernalis, a small green snake found in northern and central North America. They primarily eat invertebrates and, as a result, are susceptible to pesticides which have in some areas decimated their once plentiful numbers.

Another late night #SnakeWeek post with a Northern water snake, Nerodia sipedon, eating a young perch (I think Perca flavescens) two fairly common species in Pennsylvania where this was photographed.

Today for #SnakeWeek is one of my favorite encounters over the last two years, a Timber Rattlesnake, Crotalus horridus found in what is almost certainly an ambush position. No, it does not want to ambush humans or our pets, we are far too large, but it’s probably hoping for a chipmunk…

ALT: An angled-down image of a snake in a loose coil, head facing left and resting on the body. From neck to tail, the ground color is a darkm deep red, and the tip of each scale is tipped in black, forming a small triangular shape. The neck is a creamy yellow, also with black-tipped scales, and the head is mostly a dark orange, with a splotch of dark red on the scales between the eyes. The iris is the same dark, deep red, with a round black pupil.

Cemophora coccinea, the Scarlet Snake, one of multiple species that exhibits red, white, yellow, and black striping throughout its body. It has read and white stripes and a crown of yellow that is indicative of this species. As a result of this it often gets mistaken for other species with similar patterns. This is in the Northernmost part of their range, New Jersey, they range from there to Florida and west to Oklahoma.

As #SnakeWeek continues here’s one of the more colorful snake species in North America, the Scarlet Snake, Cemophora coccinea. I have found many of these in Florida and Georgia but this one was one of the few I found in New Jersey, the Northernmost part of their range.

ALT: An angled-down image of a snake in a loose arrangement of coils, on brownish sandy soil and facing left. The snake is pink from head to tail, with a slightly lighter shade of pink skin between each scale. The scales are very smooth and shiny. The tail is blunt like a pinky finger, and matches the head in size and shape. The eye is a small dark spot with no other features.

#SnakeWeek: (last day!) A Threadsnake (Rena humilis) from San Diego Co., CA. They live underground or under objects, and consume ant and termite larvae. Note the vestigial eyespot which functions as a detector of light & dark. Notoriously difficult to photograph. #herps #snakes #NaturePhotography 🌿

Top down image of a viper tightly coiled among brown grass and green plants. The snake's chunky viperine head is partially hidden in the center of the coil. The ground color of the snake is a straw yellow, and down the center of the back is a stripe of darker brown edged with some black scales. The stripe appears to be a series of blotches that run together, forming a small zigzag pattern. The head has the same set of colors, the iris is orangish-brown and the dark pupil is vertically elliptical.
