Going back to check on the released POwl, I thought I'd found her, instead it was this Boobook being mobbed by everything around. Given how urban the area is I wasn't too surprised not to see her. Hopefully she's found a safer, more protected area to roost. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

Powerful Owl looking out of its transport container

Powerful Owl looking out of its now open transport container
Powerful Owl flying out from the container in a blur.
The Powerful Owl release that @lucyparkerpaul.bsky.social & I helped with went beautifully last night. We found a spot where there was open space to fly, and let it settle for a while with a view of a tree that it might fly into once released. And that's exactly what it did.

Four light brown egg sacs of impressive size (each a couple centimetres long) hanging in a row from an ornamental shrub branch.
A large light brown spider with a net-like pattern on its abdomen and fuzzy legs curled up tight between two egg sacs.
Australian spiders continue to surprise and delight me. I thought these egg sacs were chrysalises and had to go back to find the parent Ordgarius spider after getting an #iNaturalist ID.

Image of a juvenile Grey butcherbird perched on a sunny branch which lies over our driveway. It’s colouring is a dappled brown & dirty white rather than the distinct white & grey/black of an adult. These guys have an iconic call and are one of the master songsters of the Australian bush. They are also deadly assassins who feed voraciously on lizards, small rodents, and insects skewering their prey with downward facing hook on the end of its beak. They are also famous for hanging their prey in branch forks to consume later: thus the name butcherbird.
Morning, Melbourne! ⛅️ 🥶 ⛅️
Here’s a juvenile #murderbirb who shared his sunny aspect with us during our morning coffee. ☕️
Very good birbs.

Samphire is a succulent, salt-tolerant shrub often found in coastal areas, like this one on the Yalata coast.
Samphire is a traditional food, high in vitamin A and a good source of calcium and iron.

When photographing a male Powerful Owl, it's always a good idea to triple check for the female. #birds #brisbane #wildoz
Male Powerful Owl towards dusk yesterday in a suburban Brisbane Park. He and his partner (below) appear to be staking out a nest hollow, only about 30m away, in preparation for the breeding season.

A little Rhinoceros Beetle (Dasygnathus trituberculatus) protesting being in the spotlight! This species makes strange squelching, scraping sounds when it feels threatened. Recorded in to Lamington National Park, Queensland.

Thursday Birdsday!
This pink cockatoo was spotted on a recent field trip in our region. Pink cockatoos are found across much of inland Australia, mostly in dry woodland country.

White-headed Pigeon posing for a portrait on my back deck in Merimbula this evening.
A handsome pigeon from the wetter forests of eastern Australia. Fortunately, I have a well forested gully over my back fence, so these birds are regular visitors. #backyardbirds #birds #WildOz
A wombat stands face-on on top of a massive green buttongrass tussock, with eucalyptus trees standing in the mist behind
Wombats are pretty big animals - almost a metre long - but Tasmanian buttongrass tussocks make them look tiny.

For this #WildlifeWednesday is the vulnerable Yellow-bellied Glider (south-eastern; Petaurus australis australis) which occurs from central Qld down to western Vic. This nocturnal and vocal marsupial lives in small family groups and can glide over 100m!

A greyish looking bird, in profile, with strongly patterned upper, and light grey underbelly. It’s sitting on gently curved branch in a dead tree and there is a section at the broken end of the branch that is covered in a green lichen.
I didn’t immediately recognise this bird while it was flying around, but got a clear view when it settled on a dead tree - a Pallid #cuckoo. #WildOz #Birding #Tasmania #Nature #Birds #SoTas
An adult female wolf spider of the family Lycosidae with about 100 baby spiders covering the rear portion of her head and the entirety of her abdomen. The spiderlings are so tightly clustered upon her that her rear becomes a shapeless blob of tiny spiders. She looks tired.
I don't have kids because 🌏 but next time you're doing the school run and the kids are fighting in the back have a thought for this female wolf spider with the kids on board. #WildOz #Spider #OzInverts #Nature

Side view of a small lacewing standing on a pale surface. The lacewing has long antennae stretched out in front and wings that are a brownish grey with a delicate pattern across them
Such a beautiful, delicate lacewing, seen in early February in the Perth Hills. I think is one of the Beaded Lacewings (Family Berothidae) but I'm not sure of the species.
