A photo looking down at a large brownish fluffy moth with elegant sweeping blotches of yellow and pinkish brown and dark brown on its wings. It is sitting on stones.
Here's another elegant NZ moth for you. This one's called the Alpine Treasure Owlet (*Ichneutica maya*).
It's mostly seen up in the mountains in the South Island but also in the mountains of the lower North Island. I saw this one up at Boyle Village in the North […]

My photo of a man, Mike Bowie, at night taking a photo of a winged insect resting on a wooden post. You can see the white ring flash around the lens on Mike's camera.
Mike Bowie's photo of an adult antlion, which is a blue-grey insect with long wings. It's sitting on a green painted wooden post and I'm in the background out-of-focus smiling. This photo is CC-BY Mike Bowie.
Here are two views of one adult of NZ' antlion species, *Weeleus acutus*. It's predatory larvae live in Sarlacc-like pits in sandy ground where they catch unwary passing insects.
I uploaded my photo of Mike Bowie photographing the antlion to #iNaturalist and […]

Beginning #botanists, a free opportunity to learn how to join this citizen science effort and learn cool #plants in the process. #iNaturalist #Botany There's a lot more to it than just snapping a photo and using an algorithm ID.
Four light brown egg sacs of impressive size (each a couple centimetres long) hanging in a row from an ornamental shrub branch.
A large light brown spider with a net-like pattern on its abdomen and fuzzy legs curled up tight between two egg sacs.
Australian spiders continue to surprise and delight me. I thought these egg sacs were chrysalises and had to go back to find the parent Ordgarius spider after getting an #iNaturalist ID.

A close-up photo of the patterns on the wings of a NZ Green Carpet Owlet moth. They are swirling and looping patterns of greens and browns and creams. You can clearly see all the coloured scales that make the patterns.
Here's another NZ moth wing for you.
This one is from a particularly elegant colour morph of a NZ Green Carpet Owlet (*Ichneutica plena*). Usually they're greener than this.

A couple of arthropods out on the sand in the evening. I went for one very short stroll at night while in Mexico. Would have loved to spend more time seeing what comes out at night.

Exciting to see a bucket-list spider while in Mexico!
An Ogre-faced Spider that I think must be an Asianopis sp. it also looks like there might only be one species present in Mexico? If that is the case this should be Asianopis aurita.

Finally got an ID (thank you Stephen Luk) for a crane fly I photographed eight years ago in Florida: Nephrotoma suturalis suturalis. The subspecies determination is due, in part, to the black-tipped femurs. #insect #diptera #tipulidae #flies #macro #inaturalist www.inaturalist.org/observations...

Guy in an iNaturalist tshirt with a camera holding a sign that says “Free Rodney Taylor, Free them all!”, standing on a patch of dirt and grass with another protestor in the background and many cars passing by.
Bee among dead leaves; bee is dark with blond hairs on her face (pronounced facial foveae), thorax mostly bare on top but with lots of hair on sides, and combs of blond hair on legs.
Pop-up protest at Clairemont and N Druid Hills yielded lots of supportive honks and the discovery of a nesting aggregation of miner bees (likely Andrena barbara) on the traffic island. Fortunately I had my camera in the car to document it for #iNaturalist.
