From below, the four red petal tips can easily be seen, roughly forming a square with a hole in its center at the flower’s opening. Inside, yellow anthers crowd around a central pistil.

I don’t often notice these flowers before they wither and give rise to pale blueish berries. The blooms are numerous, but exceptionally tiny. The fruits are sparsely hairy and quite edible.

Persistant, peut devenir assez haut, 7-8m

Ornithostaphylos oppositifolia is a monotypic genus from the chaparral of San Diego Co. and adjacent Mexico. As the epithet says, it has opposite leaves, and the fruits are dryish drupes. What a beauty! 😍 📷: John Rusk CCBY2 #Ericaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Zenobia pulverulenta is the only species in the genus and is endemic to the Southeast USA. It has broadly bell-shaped flowers and capsular fruits. I’ve seen this one only in cultivation, never in the wild. #Ericaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Pleuricospora fimbriolata is another mycoheterotroph (gets carbs by tapping into the mutualism between trees & mycorrhizae). This is one of the 11 genera & only 13 spp in the Monotropoideae. Most genera are monotypic, as is Pleuricospera. 📷: Bryce Strobel CCBY4 #Ericaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Hemitomes congestum of the Pacific Northwest is similar in morphology to Monotropsis of Eastern N. America, but I don’t think I’d ever mistake them in the field. I’ve never seen this one in the wild. This fabulous photo is by Alan Rockefeller CCBY4. ❤️❤️❤️ #Ericaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Monotropsis odorata is another mycoheterotroph. No chlorophyll needed. Most of the chloroplast genome is missing. This is one of two species: this one is from the SE USA, the other is endemic to FL.

Here’s a stand-out species from western N Amer: Sarcodes sanguinea, a mycoheterotroph. It has no chlorophyll & gets its carbs from mycorrhizae, which get their carbs from trees & shrubs. The name for this species translates to “flesh-like & bloody”! How gothic. #Ericaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

I love the manzanitas (Arctostaphylos spp), but this one is Xylococcus bicolor, endemic to the CA Floristic Province & the only sp in the genus. The genus name (“woody berry”) highlights the distinctively hard, dry fruits. Shrubs resprout after fire. 📷: John Rusk CCBY2 #Ericaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
