The UK's largest hover fly and hornet mimic Volucella Zonaria on stunning purple scabious flower. The flower is like a beautiful bubble with projecting anthers all around. Purple is like the colour of a good dream and the smell of lilacs. The fly is huge with big round eyes and wings longer than it's body and dangerous looking black stripes on a very bright yellow body. Yellow is like a warm sun. Black is like an absence of all senses.
The UK's second largest hover fly and hornet mimic, Volucella inanis on a large daisy like flower. The flower has a large head with petals like feathers in their shape. The fly is huge with big round eyes and wings longer than it's body and dangerous looking black stripes on a very bright yellow body. Yellow is like a warm sun. Black is like an absence of all senses. There are also diffused marks on its wings like the visual representation of a smell drifting through the air, but only on its tips.
Hornet mimic Volucella Pellucens on an umbelliferous flower (many flowers together in an umbrella effect) They are white (this white is like how a soft bedsheet feels). The fly is huge with big round eyes and wings longer than its body. It has a mostly shiny black body with a thick caramel belt. Caramel is like warm caramel or toffee pudding Black is like an absence of all senses. Shiny is like a glass. There are also large diffused marks in the middle of its wings like the visual representation of a smell drifting through the air.
