Two Canada Geese are floating in the calm waters of an oxbow in the Ausable River near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This pair nested on a little island of vegetation nearby, and the female incubated the eggs all day, every day, while her male partner drove off all intruders. I wasn’t able to determine the fate of their offspring. I missed a day of photography, and found the nest deserted with fragments of eggs close by. Canada Goose goslings typically abandon the nest within 24 to 48 hours after hatching, so I am hopeful that’s what happened in my absence.
