Standing at the edge of a trail looking across at a kaleidoscope of colour under clear, blue skies. The soft greens of the grass and the forest: And the chiselled mountains alive with blue / grey and copper hues, punctuated with patches of bright white snow. The icing on the cake is that the bears haven't crashed our picnic and our devices don't work here! Solitude, peace, heaven …three legs of the same stool.

The orange glow of the sun setting just behind the trees on the left, it reflections glides across lightly ripple water. Everything is almost as still as the black rock sitting in the Ucluelet harbour, just a meter from me. Not completely alone, as two others take in Nature's perfectly executed event.

Looking through the trees to the beginning of an epic series of rapids that cascade down a steep hillside. When it grabs a few trees it transforms into a debris chute: Also spectacular, but if you see it happen, best to back away from the bank.

Snapped at 1/8 second to capture the crystal, light-blue water and retain movement'; f /10 as I wanted decent focus through the entire frame.

The stunning remains of this wreck sit on a pebbled beach with a backdrop of rainforests. We're looking past the remnants of the bow, through driving rain into the Hecate Strait, the notoriously rough waters that drove the 264-foot log barge aground during a winter storm in 1928.

On this day we were to take a day long zodiac ride to SGang Gwaay UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Site: Cancelled due to rough seas. It makes me wonder why I thought this trail was a good idea. I guess I wanted to test my raingear. We came back on the following day to hike in the sunshine, which felt like it was a completely different place. The Pesuta Shipwreck Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails on Haida Gwaii.

Reflecting on a different February. Buntzen lake, surrounded by trees, mostly evergreen and mountains. With the low sun, reflections from both cover most of the lake. It is unseasonably warm, as it is this year. This scene, complete with very little snow on the mountains, would happen late March to mid April.

My wife, and my nephew climb the groomed path into the misty rainforest. Everything is a bit moist, the air is invigorating, super-charged with oxygen. We're enjoying the "easy" climb as things get rougher, and a lot warmer as we pass the second, or middle Joffre Lake.

The forest and mountains reflect of the smooth waters of Buntzen Lake under blue skies. This forest sits above a metro-area of about 3 million, at at the edge of untamed wilderness where bears, cougars and other wildlife are also trail users.
