It has very visible stripes on both sides of the face and neck, which connect with the breast plumage. Being a likely mature specimen, only the nape is red, while the crown is black; and the breast is not entirely white, but a dirty, cream color. The background is a deep, blurred green, not typical of autumn, as the photographs were taken at the end of summer, shortly before these birds began their migration to Africa. By the time I publish these images, in December, the hoopoes of the Iberian Peninsula have migrated to Africa, to lands south of the Sahara. The out-of-focus background reveals golden, brown, and green hues typical of a deciduous forest in full autumn. Although they look very similar at first glance, 𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒑𝒆𝒊 is a native and endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula, different from 𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝒗𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒊𝒔 which occurs in the rest of Europe.
