After today’s picture description, there will be a short poem that l have written inspired by this shot. This is a black-and-white photograph of a quiet canal lock, viewed from the edge of the stone channel looking straight toward the closed lock gates. In the foreground, a narrow canal runs between two thick stone walls that slope gently toward the water. The water below is dark and still, almost mirror-like, reflecting the shapes of the lock gates and the sky above. The stone walls look old and weathered, with rough surfaces and patches of wear that suggest many years of use. At the center of the image stands the lock gate itself, two tall, heavy metal doors meeting in the middle. A long horizontal beam stretches across the top of the gates, used to open and close them. The structure is symmetrical and solid, giving a sense of strength and quiet purpose. On the left side of the canal, a row of simple buildings stands in a line. Their walls are plain and light-colored, with small windows evenly spaced. On the right side, a grassy bank rise slightly above the canal wall. A bare tree with thin, delicate branches reaches into the winter sky. Behind it sits an industrial-looking structure with railings and a tower-like shape. I call it…The Quiet Lock Where dark water waits between old stone walls, the world seems to pause. Clouds wander slowly across a patient sky, while iron gates stand like guardians of silence. Nothing rushes here. Even the wind walks softly. And in the still water holding the sky’s reflection, peace settles gently like a boat without a wake.
