A photographed assemblage of vintage necklaces and silk roses atop a leather silverware case and cotton fabric. Naturally, all items (other than the leaves on the flowers) were shades of either blue or white. Colour levels have been adjusted and desaturated. Four copies of the photo have been mirrored and collaged together.
One of the most helpful critiques I ever received came when I was struggling with the mechanics of how to turn an assemblage I'd created into something that could remain a sculpture permanently. The critique was one word: Why?
Why couldn't the photograph be the work?
It entirely upended how I thought about working and what the end "product" (not that I've got enough executive function for the entrepreneurial end of the art world) needed to be before I was willing to call what I'd done an artwork.
When I describe my art making process, "playing" is usually the verb that comes out first. The tactility of gathering objects, moving & arranging them, examining the interplay... It makes me tick. #AltText
