The picture is an excerpt from the chapter:
I feel tears prickle and I sit down on a stable looking chair as a wave of sadness rolls over me. I only met Gregory once, but I could feel his dislike towards me from the moment he laid his eyes on me. I don’t know if there were rumours about me, or if he is the type to judge a person’s character entirely on their appearance, but he was cold to me the entire day. Shirly did all she could to make him warm up to me, and I also did my best to be agreeable, but nothing helped. In a short moment of privacy before I had to go, Shirly and I managed to sneak a quick kiss. Our last kiss. A few days later I received a letter from Shirly in which she told me Gregory had forbidden her from seeing me again. Such cruelty. She couldn’t get him to tell her why; he just invoked his position as the man and forbade her from mentioning me again. We have kept a letter correspondence going in the three years since—with me writing under a male pseudonym in case her husband finds the letters—but it isn’t the same. I miss her so much. Her touch, her smell, her laugh…
I force myself out of the chair. I am here to free Robert—I can’t allow myself to wallow in the misery of my life as it is now. Though I once again question why I am doing this. How could I possibly succeed against a god? This is probably tantamount to suicide. I could just leave. I could run away with Shirly and start a new life with her. The thought is enticing, but I know I would hate myself for leaving Robert to his fate. He did so much for me, and I couldn’t see most of it before it was too late. I steel myself and leave the dilapidated remains of the café. I will get him back. I will get him out.
The picture is an excerpt from the chapter:
I wake as light hits my eyes again. I shield them as they slowly adjust after hours in the dark world. Above us I see a black tear in the light-blue sky, from which the staircase emerges leading us down to the world that awaits us below. I am curious, but I dare not look down as the closeness of the clouds tell me we are still quite far above ground.
When I finally dare look, I am surprised to see what is possibly a whole world stretch out below us. The books I had read told me these realms were small and contained. I am not sure why, but it made me expect I would be able to see the edge of the realm, but I see no such thing. It stretches on and on, as far as the landscape lets me see. And there are so many of the Mistress’ servants, almost all engaged in sexual acts with each other. For a long time I can’t take my eyes off one who is so gargantuan as to use mountains as back-rest, head leaned back as countless smaller servants tend to her needs. Her head rises and she turns her face to us and smiles. Her veil and the incredible distance make it hard to be sure, but I get the distinct feeling that she is looking at the two of us.
Might as well post it here too, not only the other site.
