Just in time for #flyfriday I saw this beauty on packera at Arabia Mt. #iNat cv suggests genus Empis, which is apparently a taxonomic challenge. Might be a species where the males bring courtship presents wrapped in silk, leading to their nickname “balloon flies”.

Monday was very confusing for me. It was Ground Hog's Day and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and yet I saw my first robin of Spring!?!
These two tried and true methods of prognostication seem to be at odds! Its almost as if there isn't any science behind them at all!

Mostly black fly with long body tapering to a sharp point, thin wings folded over body, big eyes and two short arcing antennae on a green leaf, with a smaller orange and black fly that it seems to be holding by the tail with its mouthparts (obscured and not in focus).
For #flyfriday a robber fly (genus Neoitamus) that has caught a hoverfly. (Tokyo, Ueno park, May ‘25) These were really numerous, many more than I have ever seen in an urban setting.
