In the center of the frame is a cluster of dark hydrangea florets, on hairy stems, which despite their size and prickly appearance are the actual reproductive organs of this plant. Like a bullseye in a target, the florets are surrounded by dried, lighter-colored petals. The bullseye analogy is a good one! The beautiful petals have do direct reproductive function; instead they attract pollinators to the much smaller florets, where the real business gets done.
Small, dark, and dried hydrangea florets take central stage, surrounded by papery grey blossoms. Mono version. Norwich VT, March 2026.
