A black and white tripped swallowtail butterfly with red markings at the base of it's posterior wing is shown. (Eurytides marcellus) The butterfly is resting on sandy soil with brown leaf litter
Zebra swallowtails are dependent upon pawpaw plants to lay their eggs and have their caterpillars develop. This photo was taken near a group of pawpaws. Caterpillars derive toxins from pawpaw that make them distasteful to predators. 🦋🐛 #swallowtails #butterflies #nature #spring #EKC #insects #bugsky

Three-lined Balsa moth
1, 2, Three-lined Balsa, looking for a partner to dance the salsa. If you can't find me with my woody cloak, head to the hawthorn and ask any bloke. When the sun goes down and the music plays, I'm ready to move around the porch lit haze 💃

Grayscale illustration of a fly that looks very moth-like due to how fluffy it is. Text says: Clogmia albipunctata, Drain Fly
Lots of people think of drain flies, Clogmia albipunctata, as pests. I like to think of them as my tiny, fuzzy, non-perverted, shower buddies. They also cheer me on when I'm doing the dishes.

You might have noticed the dents on my male Rainbow Stag's elytra came from Its likely this deformity occurred during or shortly after pupation. Beetles fresh out of the pupa are soft and vulnerable, and its easy for a small mistake to leave lasting results.

A watercolor work in progress of a bumblebee on a pink flower with a yellow and orange center. The flower is hardly started and the bee only has yellow on it- this is very much an ugly phase!
Going to be working on the bumblebee today. Don't mind the ugly phase!

A blacklight suspended in front of a white sheet clamped to a wooden fence, with a dim white light shining on the sheet as well, at night, outdoors. This setup is meant to attract moths and other nocturnal insects.
Decided to put out the blacklight for the first time this year, in our back yard in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. Several kinds of moths, plus midges and other flies, lacewings, a few beetles. I will get a blog post up soon and post the link. #bugsky
Small, elongate jumping spider, beige in color with darker brown markings, crawling on the painted wood railing of our front porch, on a sunny day.

Lebia fuscata (Darkened Harp Ground Beetle)
Hello, my name is Lebia fuscata, but you can call me Darkened Harp Ground Beetle if you want. I just pupated out of a leaf beetle pupa that I ate, which is pretty cool, well...for me. I'm into all sorts of small bugs now. Wanna grab some grubs?

Fly visiting Mononeuria uniflora - photo taken without flash in bright sun.
Hey #bugsky #macrophotography I am signed up to go to the BugShot workshop this summer and looking to acquire a flash setup. Any thoughts on the Bolt VM-220 macro flash vs Venus KX-800? I’m using a Nikon D5000 w 85 mm Nikkor macro lens.
Thanks!
Extreme macro photo of a tiny reddish brown oribatid mite standing on the broken edge of pale, crumbly bark over dark rotting wood. The mite has a rounded, glossy, dome like body that looks almost translucent in the light, with short legs tucked underneath and tiny bristles visible near the front. The background is softly blurred in warm tan and gold tones, making the mite look jewel like against the rough texture of the log.
Close macro image of the same tiny oribatid mite on a flat piece of bark. Its body is smooth, oval, and highly polished, glowing amber brown with a glassy sheen. The mite is viewed from the side, showing its small head and legs tucked low beneath the body. The bark surface is cracked and speckled in cream, tan, and brown, with the shallow depth of field fading everything beyond the mite into a soft blur.
Another scale comparison photo of the oribatid mite on the surface of a British 5 pence coin. The coin is photographed at an angle, with raised lettering and the portrait design visible in soft focus. Near the lower left area of the coin, the mite appears as a very small amber brown dot with a rounded glossy body and tiny legs. Fine scratches and wear marks on the metal surface make the mite’s size even more striking.
Macro comparison photo showing the minute size of the oribatid mite next to a small splinter of dark wood on a British 5 pence coin. The coin fills most of the frame, with part of the lettering visible upside down. The mite appears incredibly small, only a tiny reddish brown speck with legs beside the wood fragment. The image emphasizes scale, showing that the animal is only a fraction of the width of a single letter on the coin.
An oribatid mite from the woods today. I photographed it on a log, then on a 5 pence coin to show just how tiny it is. Mites like these are the tiny machines helping decompose organic material in our ecosystems. It still boggles the mind most people don't know they exist.

A photograph of a crab spider perched on the ear of a bright green cat figurine. They're looking at the camera with a bright and curious expression, ready to explore. All over their soft brown legs and abdomen are pretty darker brown-black stripes and spots that give them a tiger-like appearance.
A photograph of the same crab spider on a Nintendo switch. The lighting is more washed out, making them look much paler. Their legs are spread out in a very crab-like manner.
A photograph of the same crab spider, this time zoomed out showing the full Nintendo switch logo of the switch dock they're sitting on. They have a small bit of cat fluff stuck to their leg, which I carefully removed after taking this pic.
Crab spider friend :3 💜🕷️💜
It made me so happy to see this little guy, I haven't seen very many bugs this winter. It's still bitterly cold in Canada, so I haven't been out doing much photography.
They were hanging around with me for a while on my desk. 💜

Learned a new type of bug yesterday at the museum and knew I had to doodle them. Do they like it? I dunno. I hope so

Bug Boy®-Adventures of a SuperB Hero on His Day Off Reduce Pi ©2026 Amy D First Panel- Bug Boy & Seymour are standing in a room with several chalk boards. There are also a few earth worms wearing glasses and one blue beetle that seems to be writing out a formula on one of the blackboards. Both of our heroes look a bit perplexed. Narrator: We find our heroes…in a math class? Second Panel- A close up of one of the worms. It looks somewhat angry. Worm: Quiet, he's trying to reduce Pi. Final Panel- A close up of Seymour, who now looks very sad. He has a thought bubble showing him eating very tiny round things. Seymour: Why would you want to reduce pie? They're already small enough to begin with.
This week: That’s not the… wait, I agree.

Digital sketch study of a common wolf spider. Upper left shows a fun fact diagram of a wolf spider hiding in its home. Wolf Spiders will make burrows in loose dirt and wait for pray to pass by. We learned this when my daugher caught a spider to observe over night and it made a little home on the side of the glass, we took a photo and I referenced it for this image. Top Right shows how drawing a peanut can be a good starting point to drawing any types of spiders.
It's #NationalSaveASpiderDay 🕷️
Wanted to draw a common wolf spider found in many US homes and urban areas. Mostly harmless spiders who just want to be left alone. Let's save a spider!

Silvery fly with a beak-like tongue, red eyes , small antennae, long legs, and long pointed abdomen on a yellow flower.
Just in time for #flyfriday I saw this beauty on packera at Arabia Mt. #iNat cv suggests genus Empis, which is apparently a taxonomic challenge. Might be a species where the males bring courtship presents wrapped in silk, leading to their nickname “balloon flies”.
