🦋Have you ever wandered around the Town of Okotoks and noticed its pollinator and water-friendly initiatives?!
We did recently during our pollinator-powered adventure in the town as part of Okotoks’ annual #PollinatorWeek.
Like all parts of the environment, water + pollinators are linked.🌎

sign photo #1 “HUMMINGBIRD & TRUMPET FLOWER (Archilochus colubris) Hummingbirds' wing speeds range from 13 to 80 beats per second. They can hover in mid-air, and they are the only birds that can fly in reverse. The long tubes of trumpet flowers force the hummingbirds to contact pollen as they seek nectar. With every visit to feed, hummingbirds propagate the growth of more flowers. Think Like an Artist "I love creating sculptures that look like they defy gravity. This ruby-throated hummingbird hovers in the air as it feeds, and symbolizes harmony, persistence, and the ability to step back and look at the big picture-all skills that are also important to being an artist!" -Sean Kenney”
sign photo #2 “Think Like an Engineer ANIMALS AND ENGINEERING If you love animals and engineering, many jobs are aligned with your passion. Pet care is a booming field for engineers. Engineers are employed at zoos to design exhibits for animals that keep them happy and safe while also viewable for zoo guests. Engineers work in government agencies monitoring environmental regulations and disease control, or in education, animal breeding, and equipment manufacturing. FUN FACT This sculpture is made using 35,508 LEGO bricks!”

My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta). In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.
Another of my #termsOfVenery print for #PollinatorWeek: The delightful term for a group of moths is an eclipse. 🐡🧪🦋This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctunral moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), 🧵

This #PollinatorWeek, I'm proud to once again lead the congressional resolution recognizing the vital role pollinators play. We're also pushing for action, like my MONARCH Act, to restore pollinator habitats and reverse species decline. Let’s keep working together, across communities.
#NativePlants are more than beautiful—they’re resilient, functional, and rooted in place. They help ecosystems thrive and support birds, bees & butterflies.🐦🐝 🦋
As climate shifts, they’re a tool for sustainability. #PollinatorWeek

A close-up of a deep red and yellow painted schinia (Schinia volupia) resting on a deep red and yellow blanket flower (Gaillardia pulchella). Their colors match so closely it takes a moment to bring the moth into focus.
Always match your #moth to your outfit! Two co-evolutionary beauties—a painted schinia and a gaillardia—offer timeless fashion advice for #PollinatorWeek. Moths, being mostly nocturnal, are the hidden heroes of flower & crop pollination.

Turn Pollinator Week into Pollinator Year. You can help pollinators by ditching pesticides & growing flowering herbaceous plants, shrubs & trees. Native plants are excellent, & you can supplement them with exotic species to feed hungry pollinators. #PollinatorWeek #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
